Dr. Theodore E. Karagias is an author, organizational leader, and disabled U.S. military veteran whose work challenges how businesses understand accessibility and customer service. His doctoral research at the University of Southern California explored why organizations struggle to meet ADA requirements despite believing they are compliant. Drawing on his research, military command, and extensive business leadership experience, he authored Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance for Customer Service, a practical guide to helping organizations better serve persons with disabilities. His mission is to close the gap between compliance and meaningful accessibility through education, awareness, and organizational change.

The talks →Dr. Theodore E. Karagias is an author, organizational leader, and disabled U.S. military veteran who believes accessibility should be more than a legal requirement. It should be a fundamental part of how organizations serve people.
His passion for accessibility developed from witnessing the challenges persons with disabilities encounter when accessing everyday goods and services. These experiences inspired his doctoral research at the University of Southern California, where he earned his Doctor of Education in Organizational Change and Leadership. His dissertation examined the knowledge, motivation, and organizational barriers affecting ADA compliance for customers in the hospitality industry.
His research explored a critical disconnect: organizations may believe they are compliant while lacking the knowledge and practices necessary to serve customers with disabilities effectively.
Determined to make his findings useful beyond academia, Dr. Karagias authored Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance for Customer Service: A Practical Handbook for Owners, Managers, and Team Members, translating complex accessibility requirements into practical guidance for organizations serving the public.
Beyond his research, Dr. Karagias brings extensive experience in organizational leadership and change management, including serving as a manufacturing Plant Manager, Director, and U.S. Air Force Reserve commander. He also holds a master's degree in Human Resource Development from the University of Illinois, emphasizing training, organizational design, and leadership development.
As a disabled veteran, he brings both professional and personal perspectives to the importance of accessibility, independence, and dignity.
Through speaking, writing, and education, Dr. Karagias challenges audiences to reconsider the difference between meeting legal requirements and genuinely serving people with disabilities.
His message is simple: True accessibility begins when organizations stop treating compliance as a checklist and start understanding the people they serve.
